Discussion Paper 2, on the Mining Act 1971 and Regulations, has now been released for public consultation as part of the review of mining laws announced on 27 September by the Minister for Mineral and Energy Resources, the Hon. Tom Koutsantonis MP. Discussion Paper 1, covering the Mines and Works Inspections Act 1920 and Regulations was released late November.
With the view to introduce a bill to Parliament in mid-2017, the State Government is encouraging stakeholders to have their say on all papers; the closing date for submissions (amended) is 24 February 2017.
The paper released on 22 December 2016 is the second in a series of three Discussion Papers to be released as part of the Leading Practice Mining Acts Review. The Mining Act 1971 is the central piece of legislation that regulates exploration, mining and quarrying in South Australia.

Discussion Paper 3 is on the Opal Mining Act 1995 and Regulations and is expected to also be released in January 2017.
Note that all submissions for each of the three Discussion Papers are due on 24 February 2017. All key stakeholders are encouraged to seek an extension if required.
