Maitland Hospital expanded haemodialysis unit opened

Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths was pleased to today attend the official opening of the Maitland Hospital newly expanded haemodialysis unit.

An additional two renal chairs have been installed at the site, allowing the provision of dialysis for up to eight people a day.

The project also included the construction of a new isolation room, and installation of Telehealth technology so that patients can speak with Adelaide-based specialists without having to travel long distances.

Haemodialysis is critical for patients with kidney failure who require therapy several times per week for up to five hours each session.

Maitland Hospital is the only hospital on Yorke Peninsula to offer renal dialysis. Other locations across SA include Berri, Ceduna, Clare, Gawler, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Victor Harbor and Whyalla.

Mr Griffiths toured the expanded dialysis unit at Maitland with Shadow Minister for Health Stephen Wade on 20th July when the expanded service commenced, as part of a two-day tour of hospitals across the Goyder electorate.
